Blog Tour: Mountain Charm by Sydney Logan

sydney logan mountain charm blog tour

It’s that time again! Sydney Logan’s latest novel, Mountain Charm, is on the way. She took some time out of her crazy busy schedule to answer my usual questions and share an excerpt from the book. As you might imagine, I’m a big fan of any book that takes place right here in the south. No one does it better than Sydney–the magic, the friendship, and the sweet romance all add to up a delicious little book. Want to know more? Read on!

A Moment with Sydney Logan

As my husband always says, “What’s your book about?”

Mountain Charm is about twenty-one year old Angelina Clark. As a young girl, she cast a love spell (as all the women in her family do at the age of thirteen). At the time, she was thrilled to perform the ritual, but she’s had to grow up very quickly after the death of her dad. Now, she wants nothing to do with witchcraft and definitely doesn’t believe in magic or the spell.

The story opens on her twenty-first birthday, and she encounters a reporter named Dylan who has come to town to write a story on her family. Sparks fly! She struggles with her attraction to him because she’s afraid his feelings are manipulated by the spell. He works hard to convince her otherwise. It’s a story very much based on faith, family, and first love, and there’s even a little magic thrown in.

Do you remember the first thing you ever wrote?  Can you tell us about it?

I remember the first thing I ever submitted for publication. I think I was twelve and it was one of those “Get Published” ads that used to be advertised in magazines. The story was called “Hope,” and it was about a bird. That’s honestly all I remember about it.

Do you prefer plaid or stripes?

Plaids

Was choosing to publish independently something you always wanted, or an option you hadn’t considered before?

It never crossed my mind to publish at all until my publisher approached me. They’ve allowed me to self-publish a few things, so I really have the best of both worlds.

Are you working on anything new at the moment?

I’m working on a short story and my third novel.

Do you have any rituals before writing?  Music or silence?  Coffee or tea?  Twizzlers or M&Ms?

No rituals. It has to be quiet or at least be instrumental music. I don’t drink coffee or tea, and I snack way too much on junk food when I write.

Have you ever based a character on someone you know?

I incorporate pieces of several people into each of my characters. Lessons Learned’s Sarah was me in a lot of ways.

What color is your umbrella?

Blue and white

Who is your favorite author and why?

This changes all the time, but right now, Jeanette Grey. I’ve really fallen in love with her writing style.

What was the last book you read?

Healing Faith by Jennyfer Browne. She’s a friend and a new author who writes Amish romance.

Do you write about locations you’ve visited, or do you rely on research?  Or do you make up entire settings in your head?

So far, I’ve written about the mountains, which is where I live. I make up the town names.

After the last word is written, then what?  Do you have pre-readers and editors who take over?  Do you begin query letters immediately?

I use pre-readers while writing. Once the book is finished, I submit to my lead editor and my editing team (there are three) read the manuscript and make a plan of action.

What song would be on the soundtrack for your book?

Landslide by Fleetwood Mac

Where can people find your book?

Can we read a little excerpt?

“It’s your birthday?” Dylan asked.

“Yes, and it was blissfully uneventful until you showed up.”

“Beautiful and infuriating,” Dylan muttered. “Look, Angelina, I was just given this assignment yesterday. I don’t have a clue about Appalachian magic tricks or devil-worshipping or whatever it is you do up in these mountains, but I have a story to write. Just let me interview you and your mom, and I’ll be back on the interstate before you can say abracadabra.

Instead of pointing out just how ignorant he sounded, Angelina decided what he truly needed was a strong dose of fear.

“Actually, I do have something you need to see. A family heirloom. Wait here?”

Excited for any useful information, Dylan’s eyes lit up and he nodded enthusiastically. Once again, those good manners kicked in, and Dylan opened the door for her.

Angelina raced inside the house. She hadn’t touched it in years, but she still remembered where her father kept the key to the case. She grabbed what she needed and quickly made her way back out to the porch, letting the screen door slam behind her.

Dylan jumped out of his chair. “What the hell?”

Angelina lifted the rifle and pointed it straight at him. He didn’t need to know the safety was on—or that the chamber was empty.

“This is a Remington, passed down from my father and his father, also known as an Appalachian magic wand. Just watch. It’s going to make you disappear.”

Angelina thought it was almost comical, hearing him curse and watching him leap off the porch. All the commotion caused her dog to chase after him, which only made Dylan sprint faster until he reached the sanctuary of his vehicle.

“Are you insane?” Dylan yelled.

“I tend to get a little crazy when someone trespasses on my property. Leave my family alone and don’t come back!”

He slammed the door and had to do some fancy maneuvering to get around her car, but within seconds, the only sounds Angelina could hear were Dylan’s squealing tires, her dog’s noisy bark, and her mother’s hearty laughter.

About the Book

“True love and sweet whispers, till death do us part;

Send someone to love my Appalachian heart.”

At the age of thirteen, Angelina Clark followed in the footsteps of her ancestors by casting an Appalachian love spell, which promised she would blossom into a beautiful and gifted woman who would find her true love. A young Angelina had been thrilled to participate in the sacred ritual, but through the years, her father’s untimely death and her mother’s failing health have shaken Angelina’s magical faith to its core. As her twenty-first birthday approaches, she refuses to practice her supernatural gifts and no longer believes in the love charm.

That is, until Dylan Thomas arrives on her front porch.

Dylan, a Nashville writer, travels to the mountain town of Maple Ridge to unearth the family’s supernatural secrets. While her clairvoyant mother is convinced that Dylan is her daughter’s soul mate, Angelina refuses to see the nosy reporter as anything more than a nuisance.

Despite their constant bickering, sparks fly.

Dylan admits he feels strangely drawn to Angelina and is in no hurry to leave Maple Ridge or publish his magazine article. Fearful that his emotions are being influenced by the spell, a stubborn Angelina struggles to fight her own budding attraction to the reporter.

The two inevitably grow closer just as her mother’s health begins to deteriorate, and Angelina is faced with the possibility of selling the family’s music shop to pay the mounting medical expenses. Desperate to help the woman he loves, Dylan explores his own family tree and finds support from an unlikely source. Can he finally prove his love is real—spell or no spell?

A story filled with love, friendship, family, and just a hint of Appalachian magic, Mountain Charm will leave you spellbound.

A Night Out with the Barrys

Or, a Reality Show without Cameras

pomodoro eastWe’ve tried a few times to get into Pomodoro East but have never been able to find a parking spot. Seems the best time to go is Monday night. Tonight was the night for some serious pasta—or pizza in Liam’s case.

As you might imagine, most dinners out end in giggles on my part, but sometimes the conversation is just too funny not to share. Tonight’s episode was one of those times. We scoured the menu, flinging jabs at each other about food choices.

“Here’s a huge steak. That sounds about right for you.”

“I bet you want this girlie salad thing.”

We settled on vegetable lasagna for me, and roasted chicken pizza with mushrooms for Liam. Before I delve into the conversation, let me state for the record that the lasagna was absolutely delicious. Nothing that follows is meant to harm the reputation of Pomodoro East or their delicious vegetable lasagna in any way.

Now, on with the show.

I noticed Liam pulling the crust off the pizza and leaving the good stuff on his plate. Concerned, I asked, “Is the chicken on that pizza good?”

“Yeah, but I’m off mushrooms.”

Boggled, I replied, “The menu said there’d be mushrooms. Didn’t you read that part?”

“I’m eating everything but the mushrooms. Calm down, woman.”

“Why don’t you just pick the mushrooms off instead of tearing the whole thing apart?”

“The crust is amazing. The chicken is good, but it sucks compared to this crust. I don’t even like crust. How’s your lasagna? Does it have chicken in it?”

“It’s vegetable lasagna.”

He froze, torn pizza hovering over his plate. “No meat? How can you eat lasagna with no meat?”

“It’s really good; don’t worry.”

“You should send it back. Who makes lasagna with no meat in it? Not even a little bit?”

“I can’t send it back just because it has no meat, babe. I ordered vegetable lasagna. I knew what I was getting.”

He thought for a minute, obviously trying to work around the whole “get what you ask for thing.”

“You should tell them it’s broken. I’ll tell them. We’ll get you a real lasagna.”

After looking around the restaurant for the server with no luck, he just called out, “Excuse me. My wife’s lasagna is broken. We require a new one with meat in it, please.”

“Stop that,” I hissed. “It’s really good. I don’t need the meat to have a meal, you goof.”

He stared at the half-eaten food on my plate and shook his head. “It’s just a salad. A warm, cheesy salad. Gross.”

Wraith Enchanted Cover Reveal!

Get Ready for the Second Book in the Mesmerizing Wraith Series

Eeeek! Melissa Fox (who, as everyone knows, is one of my favorite people in the world) just received the cover and release date for book two in the Wraith series, Wraith Enchanted. Because she maybe loves me as much as I love her, she’s letting me share the amazingness here. First, let’s see what this story is about:

Wraith Enchanted

Celia Brian is a witch—and that’s not the worst of her problems. She’s been in love with spell-catching Wraith warrior Jonas Grey her entire life. Sparring partner, friend, confidante—that’s all she expects from Jonas. Beautiful golden gods aren’t meant for mere mortals, even if she does entertain fantasies every once in a while.

After demons murder his wife, the only focus Jonas has is killing his enemies. He lost his Amorta, his soul mate, and doesn’t deserve to be interested in another woman, especially not his good friend and boss’s daughter.

When Celia unearths an ancient riddle that triggers a series of attempts on her life, Jonas’s protective instincts are roused. Bound by a prophecy that could grant their deepest desires or take their lives, Jonas and Celia engage in the age-old battle between good and evil, life and death, and male and female.

Excited? I thought so. Now, let’s look at the cover, created by The Wild Rose Press designer Kim Mendoza.

“What do you do to me?” he murmured almost to himself as he examined her face. Her blue eyes widened, unfocused, pupils blown. His narrowed. “You’re not conventionally beautiful. You’re not what usually attracts me, but I’m attracted anyway.”

“Great.” She struggled to steady her voice, but the breathless sound made him want to eat her up. “That’s flattering.”

“I don’t mean to flatter. I mean to figure out what it is you’re doing to me.”

“Doing to you?” Celia bit out in a dangerous tone, and her eyes cleared from the thrall of their kiss. “You think I’m doing something to you? I have to use my powers to make you want me?”

He bit back the snappish retort, the snarl brought out by base emotions, and forced his voice to be calm. Even. Forced himself not to grab and run, take and keep. He was going mad. “Who said I wanted you?”

She arched a brow in disbelief, and her gaze traveled down his body to focus below his waist. He twitched and instinctively fought back. It wasn’t in his nature to be bested at anything.

“You do have beautiful eyes.” They shot back to his and widened. He lowered his lids, smoldering her, moving his gaze to her mouth. “Such pretty skin. So soft and smooth. Touchable. Can I touch you, Celia?”

Her mouth parted on a gasp, and he took it for permission. One finger traced along her cheek from the corner of her eye to her mouth.

“Lovely. You’re blushing. Does my touch do that to you? And your mouth.” He lowered his head a fraction of an inch. “So wide and soft.”

His fingertip brushed her lower lip, and her breath hitched. “Made for kissing, isn’t it? Can I kiss you, Celia? Will you let me kiss your pretty mouth?”

“Oh,” she breathed, eyelids fluttering. The enthrallment was back. “Oh. Yes.”

Wraith Enchanted will be available for exclusively for Kindle in July. You know I’ll tweet like crazy the moment it’s available. For print and all other eBook formats, Wraith Enchanted will be available October 18.

What I’ve Been Doing

All the Things

Life is always a bit nuts in the Barry House. I’ve been working as a content writer/project manager for a marketing firm here in Nashville in addition to preparing quite a few books for publishing. I know it’s been a long time since The Kingdom first appeared, and people may wonder if the second will ever arrive. I promise it will. It’s in the last round of edits right now, as is another teen paranormal novel that should be polished and ready to present in the next couple of weeks. In and around these things, I do other fun stuff, like running off to Kentucky to sing with the Corbin High School Jazz Band. One of my very good friends from college is now the director, and he asked me to join them to sing Gerswhin’s The Man I Love and Adele’s Skyfall.

Check out the Corbin High School Jazz Band. They’re really pretty amazing. The Gershwin and Skyfall are at 5:44 and 14:41 respectively. Enjoy!

On Writing: Write What You Know? Maybe Not.

Today’s post on Fight for Your Write is from Jeanette Grey. M and I shamelessly stalked her (and complimented her profusely) until she agreed to join us for a day. She’s a brilliant writer, capable of evoking swoony feelings without any of the cheese. In this post, she tells us WHY she can do that. Go check it out!
